公冶長 第五篇 共二十八章

 

5.1 :公冶長,可妻也.雖在縲絏(luxie縲絏呂薛)之中,非其罪也;…以其子妻之.

本章說孔子公冶長,並納為壻.

老師說:公冶長,可以以女嫁給他.雖然曾在牢獄之中,但不是他應得的罪刑. 於是以女兒嫁給了他.

公冶長:公冶,孔子弟子,後納為壻,時受黑索繫縛之罪.

縲絏:(luxie縲絏呂薛,; 同紲/繫動物之繩索:

Confucius said of Gong Yechang: a person worthwhile to be a husband. Although he is trussed up  like an animal yet he had committed no crime to deserve that punishment.

Confucius married his child to him as wife.

5.2 :南容,邦有道不廢,邦無道免於刑戮.以其兄之子妻之.

本章述南容之賢.

老師說:南容在有道的國家不會被廢棄的,在無道的國家也可免遭刑戮.

南容:,子容.孔子弟子.孔子兄之壻.

Confucius talked about Nang Rong: In a country where it is moral rectitude, Nang Rong would not be forsaken. In a country where it is not moral rectitude, Nang Rong would not be punisheded.

Confucius gave Nang Rong the daughter of his elder brother as wife.

5.3 :子賤,君子哉若人!無君子者,斯焉取斯?

本章述子賤之德.

老師說:子賤,此人真君子也!國無君子,此人如何學來這樣的品德?!

子賤:不齊.孔子弟子; 若人:猶云此人(子賤); (子賤)焉取斯(如此品德);

Confucius commented on Zijian: A true virtue indeed is such a man! (if)Lu has no virtuous persons(?) how could this man have acquired his character?

5.4 子貢問曰:也何如? :女器也.…:何器也? …:瑚璉也.

本章評子貢品德.

子貢:()是怎樣的一個人呢?…老師說:你是個有用之材;…子貢:是何種樣的器材;…老師說:你是瑚璉一樣的廊廟之材;

女器:女同汝(子貢); :材也; 瑚璉:宗廟盛稷之祭器; :coral,美且貴.

子貢:國人.(貢本字贛),姓端木名賜.孔子弟子,有口才,能料事,善科殖,家累千金.相衛,.嘗說吳出師敵齊以存魯.聘享諸侯.所至之國,其國君無不與之分庭抗禮.卒於齊.

Zigong asked: Ci(Zigong’s first name), what is your assessment on him?(Zigong himself)

Confucius said: You are an utensul.

Ci asked: What kind?

Confucius said:A valuable sacrificial untensil inlaid with jewelleries.

5.5 或曰:,仁而不佞; :焉用佞?禦人以口給,屢憎於人.

本章指仁者不在於善辯也.

有人說:是個仁人而口才不好.老師說:何必要用口才? 對付別人用口才,常常被人討厭.我不知道是不是稱得上是仁人,但何必要口才呢?

:(ran)仲弓,孔子弟子.:善辯之人;禦人:對付別人;口給:利口,口辭敏捷;:厭惡也.

Someone said:Ran Young is truly virtuous but incapable in given to flattery.

Confucius said:What is the good of being witty in given to flattery? People who are professed in sophistry mostly accumulated hatred.I know not whether Ran Young is truly virtuous, but why should he be smarmy?

5.6 使漆雕開,對曰:吾斯之未能信; ().

本章明漆雕開之品行.

老師使漆雕開去當官,漆雕開:我對從政這事,還沒有自信;老師聽了很喜悅.

漆雕開:漆雕.子若.孔子弟子.

:出事從官; 吾斯之未能信:我對此還沒足信心.

參閱4.14:不患無位,患所以立.不患莫己知,求為可知也.

Confucius wished to assign Qi Diaokai to an official post. Qi Diaokai replied: I am not confident yet.

Confucius was pleased.

5.7:道不行,乘桴浮於海,從我者,其由與? …子路聞之喜. 子曰:由也,好勇過我,無所取材.

本章孔子[]之不行.

老師說:道不能行,我想乘一小木筏飄浮到海外去.能跟從我的,只有?子路聽到心大喜.孔子:,好勇勝過我,就是不能裁度事理.孔子蓋歎[]之不行,非真欲飄浮到海外去.

無所取材:材與裁同,不能裁度事理; 乘桴浮海:編竹木為排(小者曰桴)飄浮到海外;

:子路魯國卞人,姓仲名由字子路一字季路,孔子弟子, (孔子十哲之一:子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏).性鄙而好勇.事親孝.衛大夫孔悝(kui粵讀灰),以為邑宰,時出公在位,孔悝母伯姬與豎良夫謀立.太子(kuai粤讀拐)(gui粵讀貴)廹孔悝與蒯瞶盟而劫出公.出公奔.子路入,見蒯瞶,請殺孔悝,此謂孔悝之難,子路遂被害.

Confucius said: My doctrines make no progress here.I shall ride a raft and drift on the sea.He who will accompany me would be You(Zilu’s name), I dare say…;Zilu hearing this was glad. Confucius continue to say:You is more daring than I am,but he is in lack of judgement.

5.8 孟武伯:子路仁乎? :不知也; 又問, 子曰:由也,千乘之國,可使治其賦也;不知其仁也; …求也何如? 子曰:求也,千室之邑,百乘之家,可使為之宰也,不知其仁也; …也何如? 子曰:赤也,束帶立於朝,可使與賓客言也,不知其仁也.

本章以明孔子不以仁輕許人.

孟武伯:子路仁德嗎?…孔子:不知道;…孟武伯再問.孔子:仲由,在擁有千輛戰車的國家,可以讓他來治理軍事,但是我不知道他是不是仁德;…孟武伯又問:冉求怎麼樣?…孔子:,千戶人家的城鎮,有百輛戰車的大夫封地,可以讓他來擔任行政長官,但我不知道他是不是仁德;…孟武伯又問:怎麼樣?…孔子:公西赤,穿上朝服站在朝堂之上,可以讓他和外國的使者交談,但我不知道他是不是仁德;

:兵也,古時以田賦出兵.

百乘之家:擁有百輛戰車的鄉大夫之家.

:邑之長或家臣之通稱.

束帶:古時官服必有大帶束身以整齊其服.

孟武伯[仲孫,(zhi4),{},國大夫孟懿子的兒子

子路:子路一字季路,,孔子弟子,孔子九歲, (孔子十哲之一:子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏).性鄙而好勇.事親孝.大夫孔悝(kui悝粵),以為邑宰,出公在位,孔悝伯姬豎良夫謀立太子蒯瞶(kuai;gui瞶粵,瞶本字義眼昏如瞎,例句如聾如瞶)孔悝蒯瞶盟而劫出公.出公.子路,蒯瞶,請殺孔悝,此謂孔悝之難,子路遂被害.

:522-489子有,(ran),孔子弟子.有才藝,性謙退,任季氏家宰.

:公西,子華,.孔子弟子.束帶立朝,知賓主之儀.

Mang Wubo asked about Zilu, wether he is virtuous.

Confucius said: I do not know.

Mang Wudo asked again; Confucius said: In a kingdom of a thousand chariots,You might be fit to manage the military levies.But I do not know whether he is virtuous.

Mang Wudo asked: What do you say of Ranqiu?

Confucius replied:In a city of a thousand families, or a clan of a hundred chariots, Ranqiu might be fit as its governor. But I do not know whether he is virtuous.

Mang Wudo asked: What do you say of Gong Xihua?

Confucius said:With his sash girt and standing in a court, Gong Xihua is fit to be a master of ceremony and converse with visitors and guests.but I do not know whether he is virtuous.
5.9子貢:女與,孰愈?  對曰:,何敢望? ,聞一以知十,,聞一以知二. …:弗如也,吾與女弗如也.

本章以子貢顏回相比,顏回之德.

老師對子貢說:你和顏回,誰強些? 子貢:怎敢和相比呢?颜回(颜淵)聽到一分,便能知道十分.我聽到一分只知道兩分;…老師說:你是不如他,我和你都不如他呢!

孰愈:誰為優越.

聞一知十:聞知一點,悟知全體.弗如:難比.:

子貢:國人.(貢本字贛),姓端木名賜.孔子弟子,有口才,能料事,善科殖,家累千金.相衛,.嘗說吳出師敵齊以存魯.聘享諸侯.所至之國,其國君無不與之分庭抗禮.卒於齊.

:521-490顏名回.字子淵,亦謂顏淵.魯國人.孔子弟子(孔子十哲之一:子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏).敏而好學.問一知十,孔子自認不如.回不遷怒,不貳過,貧居陋巷,簞食(dan;古時竹飯碗)瓢飲(piao,剖開的葫蘆以盛水),而不改其樂.孔子稱其賢.早卒,後世尊為復聖.

Confucius said to Zigong: Whom do you consider superior, yourself or Hui?

Zigong replied:How dare I compare myself with Hui! Hui hears one and knows ten.I hear one and can only know two.

Confucius said: Not quite as good, You and I both not quite as good as Hui!

5.10宰予晝寢,子曰:朽木不可雕也.糞土之牆,不可杇也,與何誅? …子曰:始吾於人也,聽其言而信其行,今吾於人也,聽其言而觀其行. 與改是.

本章因責宰予,孔子改變了對人的觀察.

宰予在白天裡睡眠,老師說:腐爛的木頭不能雕刻.爛泥的牆不能粉飾.我對宰予,何須去責難他! …老師說:我初對人的看法,聽了他的話,就信了他的行為.現在我對人的看法,聽了他的話,還要觀察他的行為.這是由於宰予而改變的.

宰予:宰我,,子我,國人.宰予口齒伶俐,能說善辯,被列為孔門四科十哲(言語科)之一.孔子常派遣他出使各國,使于”,“使于.宰予遇事有自己的主見.

:所以祀其地之神.立社必樹其地所宜之木; 朽木:腐木; 糞土:穢土; :.:同圬(trowel泥瓦工用的抹)

Zaiyu was found sleeping in the daytime. Confucius condemned: Rotten wood can not be carved, a wall stands on dungs will not receive the trowel.This Zaiyu,what is the use of my reproving him?

Confucius said: At first my way to assess a person was to hear the word and and trust the action. Now, my way is to hear the word and watch the action. It is from Zaiyu That I have learned to make this change.

5.11 :吾未見剛者.或對曰:申棖; …:也慾,焉得剛?

本章說剛的要義

老師說:我沒有見過剛強的人; …有人答:申棖? …孔子:申棖欲望太多,怎麼能說剛強.

:,國人,孔子弟子,七十二賢之一.唐開元二十七年,西元739追封為{},宋大中祥符二年(西元1009)封為{文登侯},明嘉靖九年(西元1530)封為先賢.

:富貴貧賤威武患難,無所屈撓.唯義是守.

Confucius said:I have not seen a true resolute and steadfast person. Someone replied: There is Shen Chang.

Confucius said: Chang is a desirous person.How can he be true resolute and steadfast?

5.12子貢:我不欲人之加諸我也.吾亦欲無加諸人也;…子曰:,非爾所及也.

本章子貢品德.

子貢:我不願人把不義加在我身上.我也願把不義加在别人身上; …老師說:!這不是你能力所能得到的呀!

:加陵(侵侮;欺壓)

非爾所及也:不是你能力所及的

子貢:衛國人.(貢本字贛),姓端木名賜.孔子弟子,有口才,能料事,善科殖,家累千金.相衛,.嘗說吳出師敵齊以存魯.聘享諸侯.所至之國,其國君無不與之分庭抗禮.卒於齊.

Zigong said: I wish people do not force onto me as I do not force onto them.

Confucius said: Oh Ci!(Zigong’s name), this is quite out of your control!

5.13 子貢:夫子之文章,可得而聞也.夫子之言性與天道,不可得而聞也.

本章言孔子之道,深微奧妙,不得聞知.

老師的詩書禮樂是可以聽到的,老師談性和天道的精義,就不可能聞而知之了.

:人所受之於天的本質.

子貢:國人.(貢本字贛),姓端木名賜.孔子弟子,有口才,能料事,善科殖,家累千金.相衛,.嘗說吳出師敵齊以存魯.聘享諸侯.所至之國,其國君無不與之分庭抗禮.卒於齊.

Zigong said: Our master’s teachings of the classics(poetry,history,rites,music) can be seen in the archives.His discourse on human nature and the mandate of Heaven has no allusion to read about.

5.14子路有聞,未之能行,唯恐有聞.

本章明子路聞到善道必勇於趕快做到.

子路聽到好的道理,還沒做到的時候,唯恐又聽到其他的好道理(故要趕快的做)

有聞:聞到善道.有聞(2):有通又.

子路:子路一字季路,,孔子弟子,孔子九歲, (孔子十哲之一:子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏).性鄙而好勇.事親孝.大夫孔悝(kui悝粵),以為邑宰,出公在位,孔悝伯姬豎良夫謀立太子蒯瞶(kuai;gui瞶粵,瞶本字義眼昏如瞎,例句如聾如瞶)孔悝蒯瞶盟而劫出公.出公.子路,蒯瞶,請殺孔悝,此謂孔悝之難,子路遂被害.

Zilu heard of a good suggestion and was yet able to practise it,he would fear lest a different good suggestion might be heard.

5.15子貢問曰:孔文子何以謂之文也? …子曰:敏而好學,不恥下問,是以謂之文也.

本章說明[],為一種美好的諡法.

子貢:孔文子,[]的諡法是怎樣意義? …老師說:他為人勤勉,好學,向在他下的人去請教,不以為恥,所以諡他為[].

孔文子:(yu,本字義養馬的地方).大夫.諡曰;

:諡法,勤學好問曰文; 不恥下問:不以問於在下者為恥.

子貢:國人.(貢本字贛),姓端木名賜.孔子弟子,有口才,能料事,善科殖,家累千金.相衛,.嘗說吳出師敵齊以存魯.聘享諸侯.所至之國,其國君無不與之分庭抗禮.卒於齊.

Zigong asked: On what ground did Kong Wenzi being qualified for a posthumous title{Wen}(a man of erudition) conferred on him?

Confucius said:He was keen and intellectual curious. He was not ashamed to ask and learn of his inferiors. That’s an erudite character qualified for the title {Wen}.

5.16 :子產有君子之道四焉:其行己也恭,其事上也敬,其養民也惠,其使民也義.

本章贊子產之美德.

老師謂子產合符君子之道的四點:做人謙遜;事奉上級很肅慎,養護人民有恩惠,使用民力很得宜.

:謙遜; :肅慎;:利益於人;:行事得宜.

子產:公孫.國大夫.

Confucius talked about Zichan: He had four of the characteristics of a man of virtue.He was humble in his conduct;he was respectful serving his superiors;he was generous in nourishing his people; he was proper in ordering his labour.
5.17:晏平仲善與人交,久而敬之.

本章述晏平仲之品德.

老師說:晏平仲很會和人交朋友.他和人相處很長久還是一樣地恭敬人.

晏平仲:,謚曰.國大夫.

Confucius said:Yan Pingzhong knew well how to maintain friendships. His respects for friends would not faint in duration.

5.18:臧文仲,山節藻(zhuo粵讀絕),何如其知也?

本章論臧文仲不智.

老師說:臧文仲寶藏大龜之屋,斗拱上刻著山形,短柱上畫著水草形,(裝飾如天子的宗廟一般)他那能說是知者呢? (不能明辨是非)

:/大龜名.因南方蔡地出善龜,因以為名.?藏也;文仲寶藏一大龜也; :屋中柱頭之斗拱,刻山形於節; :zhuo粵讀絕,屋梁上的短柱,畫水草於梲.此為天子廟飾.

臧文仲:臧孫,.大夫,諡曰文.

Confucius said: Zang Wenshong hid a la rge tortoise in his house,on the headings of all main pillars, were carved with hills, all other pillars were painted with duckweeds above the beams,(these are special design exclusive for the prince’s grand temple); How could he be called learned.

5.19子張問曰:令尹子文,三任為令尹,無喜色,三已之,無慍色,舊令尹之政,必以告新令尹,何如? …子曰:忠矣! …:仁以乎? …:未知,焉得仁? …崔子弒齊君,陳文子有馬十乘,棄而違之,至於他邦,則曰:猶吾大夫崔子也; 違之. 之一邦,則又曰: 猶吾大夫崔子也; 違之. 何如? 子曰:清矣. …:仁矣乎? …:未知, 焉得仁?

本章明仁為全德,不予輕許.

顓孫師(子張):國令尹子文,三次做令尹,沒有喜色,三次罷官,沒有怨怒之色,他做令尹時的舊政,必告之新令尹,這人怎樣呢?…老師說:可稱得忠了;…子張又說:可算是仁者吧;…老師說:這我不知,怎算是仁者?…子張又問:崔杼齊莊公,當時國大夫陳文子有馬車十輛,也棄掉離開到別國去,他就說:這裡的大臣,還是跟我國大夫崔子一樣,便又離開,再到另一國去,他又說:這兒的大臣,還是跟我國大夫崔子一樣,於是又走了,這人怎樣?…老師說:稱得上清高了;…子張:可算是仁者了吧?…老師說:這我不知,怎樣能算是仁者呢?

已知:罷官; 馬十乘:四十匹馬,(一乘乃四馬一車); :去也; 猶吾大夫崔子也:言他國執政大臣,猶如崔杼欲弑君作亂也; :往也; :言其能棄祿位,去亂邦,不汚其身.

子張:顓孫,孔子弟子.孔子48.陳國人,孔子曾說過師也過(11.14),師也辟(11.16);後世有子張之儒派.令尹:官位,楚上卿執政者;

子文:,穀於菟.

崔子:崔杼,大夫.崔杼弑齊君莊公.

陳文子:須無.大夫.

Zizhang asked: Minister Ziwen was appointed three times,yet no joyful countenance was manifested. He was replaced three times , neither did his countenance manifest chagrined. He assured the handover of office was in perfect order and the new minister was well informed of the old policies.; what do you say of him?

Confucius replied:Loyal.

Zizhang asked: Was he perfectly virtuous?

Confucius said: I do not know all of him, how can he be pronounced perfectly virtuous?

Zizhang asked:When minister Cuizi killed the prince of Qi, Chen Wen though he possesses forty horses, abandoned them and left the country,Arriving to another state, he saidthey are like our minister Cuizi and left it. He came to a second state, and with the same observation, left it alsowhat do you say of him?

Confucius said: He has a clear mind.

Zizhang asked: Was he perfectly virtuous?

Confucius said: I do not know all of him, how can I say he is perfectly virtuous?

5.20 季文子三思而後行,聞之曰:,斯可矣!

本章言季文子多思不足貴.

季文子遇事都要經過次的思考.老師聽到後說:只要再思(摲思),這就可以了.

三思:多思.三不讀摲.

:義再思(摲思也)/芟除雜亂之意.

季文子:(?-568)複姓季孫,行父.諡曰.大夫.文公為卿,凡事三思而後行.歷相,,三君.時稱其忠.以儉約自持.妾不衣帛(silk fabrics),馬不食粟(millet)

‘Ji wenzi thinks thrice before he acts. (‘thrice’has negative connotations as excessive and hesitant). Confucius hears it and says: Think twice is already enough.

5.21 :(寧之古字)武子邦有道則知,邦無道則愚;其知可及也,其愚不可及也.

本章美寗武子品德

寗武子:姓寗(),名兪.諡曰武.衛大夫.

老師說:寗武子在國家政治修明時,就表現出才智來,在國家政治混亂時, 就表現出很愚拙,這智別人還可以學得到,這愚則別人就無法學得到了.

Confucius said: When a state is in good order, Ning Wu would participate wisely. When the state is inproper managed, he would keep quiet as if he is stupid.Other may equal his wisdom, but they can not equal his stupidity.

5.22在陳曰:歸與? 歸與?吾黨之小子狂簡,斐然成章,不知所以裁之.

本章記孔子困在陳時,見道不行,有思魯之歎.

老師在,歎道:歸去吧! 歸去吧!的門下弟子們,心志大,對修身之事反很疏略,學問文章雖有些成就,但不知裁節以合於確切之用.

:春秋時國名.

吾黨之小子:我門下在魯的弟子;狂簡:有大志而才學疏略; 斐言成章:言文理有足觀者; 裁之:剪裁以後方確切可用.

Confucius and his disciples were  stuck in Chen.(shortage of food)

Confucius said: Lets go back, lets go back home! The student of my school are ambitious but too hasty. They are accomplished and advanced so far, but they do not know how to shape and direct themselves.

5.23:伯夷叔齊,不念舊惡,怨是用希.

本章美夷齊之德.

老師說:伯夷,叔齊,不記掛夙怨,於是別人對他的怨恨就少了.

伯夷,叔齊:弘竹君之二子.商周之時賢人.

Confucius said:Boyi and Shuqi did not keep in mind of wrong doings people done onto them.Hence the resentments directed towards them were scarce.

5.24:孰謂微生高? 或乞醯(xi醯粵讀希),乞諸其鄰而與之.

本章說微生高委曲行事,博人稱譽,非直之精義.

老師說:誰說微生高正直? 有人向他索醋,他家沒有,轉向鄰居討來給他.

:xi醯粵讀希,醋也.

微生高:微生..

Confucius said:Who says Weishang Gao is honest? Someone begged him for some vinegar and he begged it of his neighbor and gave it to the beggar.(instead of admitting that he was poor himself too)

5.25:巧言,令色,足恭,左丘明恥之.亦恥之.匿怨而友其人, 左丘明恥之.亦恥之.

本章孔子左丘明與之恥德有同感.

老師說:說討人喜歡的話,裝著討人喜歡的臉色,向人過份恭敬的態度,左丘明認為可恥,我也以為可恥的.隱藏著對人的怨恨,表面還和人友好,左丘明認為可恥,我也以為可恥的.

足恭:言過於恭敬; 匿怨:隱藏著怨恨.

左丘明:,或說即傳作者.左傳左氏.此乃稱左丘氏.疑非一人.

Confucius said:Flattering speeches,obsequiousness, excessive respect,Zuo Qiuming considered them as shameful conduct,I considered them shamful ttoo.To conceal resentment against a person and appears friendly with him/her,Zuo Qiuming considered it  as a shameful behavior,and so am I.

5.26顏淵,季路,子曰:(he)各言爾志?…子路曰:願車馬,衣輕裘,與朋友共,敝之而無憾; …顏淵:願無伐喜,無施勞;…子路:願聞之志;…:老者安之,朋友信之,少者懷之,

本章記孔子與弟子各言其志.

顏淵子路站立一旁,老師說:何不談談各人的志願?…子路:憤願張自己的車馬,穿的好皮衣,和朋友共用,就是弄壞了,也沒有怨恨;…顏淵:我願不自誇才能,不誇張自己的功勞;…子路:希望聽聽老師的志願;…老師說:我願對老者,使他們得到安樂,使朋友能信得過我,對年少的人,使他們對我有懷念.

:立與長者之旁; : (he,義反為何不?; :穿著; 輕裘:皮衣之質美而輕者; :壞也; 伐善:自誇好事; 施勞:誇張自己的功勞;

顏淵:521-490顏名回.字子淵,亦謂顏淵.魯國人.孔子弟子(孔子十哲之一:子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏)..敏而好學.問一知十,孔子自認不如.回不遷怒,不貳過,貧居陋巷,簞食(dan;古時竹飯碗)瓢飲(piao,剖開的葫蘆以盛水),而不改其樂.孔子稱其賢.早卒,後世尊為復聖.

Yan Yuan and Zi Lu were standing aside of the teacher, Confucius said to them:Let each of you tell your ambition.

Zilu said:I would like to having chariots and horses,and light fur clothes, to share them with friends.and though they might spoil them, I would not be unhappy.

Yan Yuan said:I would like not to boast of my outstandings,,not to make a flamboyance of my meritorious deeds.

Zilu then said:I like to hear you, master, your ambition.

Confucius said:They are in regard to the aged,to provide them comfort, to griends, to show them sincerity, to youngsters,to treat them tenderly,

…As a teacher of humanity, Confucius stated his ambition in terms of concern for human beings in this conversation: To bring comfort to the old,to have trust in friends,and to cherish the young.

5.27:已矣乎! 吾未見能見其過,而內自訟者也.

本章歎世人不能自見己過而自責.

老師說:已經不行啦! 我沒見過一人(包括自己)能察覺自己的過失而能夠內心自責的.

內自訟:內心自己責備自己.

Confucius said: Its all over,I have not yet seen a person (including myself)who could perceive his own faults and to self accuse. 

…Confucius made it explicit that he was far from attaining sagehood and that all he really excelled in was [love of learning]

5.28:十室之邑,必有忠信如丘者焉,不如丘之好學也.

本章歎世人不知好學.

老師說:十戶人家的小村邑,定有天性忠信如我一樣.但沒有能像我一樣進德修身去好學.

十室之邑:十戶人家之小地方.

Confucius said:In a hamlet of ten families, there is for sure a person loyal and honest like Qiu(Confucius himself)…yet not as fond of learning as Qiu
