19.1子張:士見危致命,見得思義,祭思敬,喪思哀,其可已矣!

本章論士之德行.

子張:一個讀書人,遇到國家危難時,不惜其身.見到有利可得時,當考慮到是否合義.祭祀時,當想到要恭敬.居喪時,當想到應盡哀.能這樣就可以了.

致命:授命,不惜其身;

子張:顓孫,孔子弟子.孔子48.陳國人,孔子曾說過師也過(11.14),師也辟(11.16);後世有子張之儒派.

Zizhang said:A man of virtue,when his country is in danger,he will offer his life; when facing gains,he will think of righteousness first,when attending sacrificial ceremony,he will keep respects in mind, when mourning he will be genuinely grievous. Such a man of virtue indeed.

19.2子張:執德不弘,信道不篤,焉能為? 焉能為?

本章言守德信道,宜弘宜篤也.

子張:守着德不去弘大,信着道不深厚篤實,這樣的人,怎能算他有道? 怎能算他無道?

:守義; :大義; :深厚切實;

子張:顓孫,孔子弟子.孔子48.陳國人,孔子曾說過師也過(11.14),師也辟(11.16);後世有子張之儒派.

Zizhang said:When a man holds virtue but can not enhance it.He believes the righteous path but not serious enough.How can he be said to have possessed virtue or not?

19.3子夏之門人問交子張,子張:子夏云何? …對曰:子夏可者與之,其不可者拒之”;…子張:異乎吾所.君子尊賢而容眾.嘉善而矜不能.我之大賢與?於人何所不容?我之不賢與?人將拒我,如之何其拒人也?

本章論結交之造也.

子夏的學生問交友之道子張,子張:你們的老師子夏是怎麼說的呢? …那弟子回答:我們的老師說:可交的就和他做個朋友.那不可交的就拒絕和他往還;…子張:這和我聽到的不一樣. “君子當尊敬有賢德之人而,又能容納普通人.讚美善良的,同情那些能力差的人”,我如果是個大賢人,對任何人有什麼不能容納的呢?我如果不是一個賢人,別人已經將要拒絕我,我怎麽樣去拒絕人呢?

問交:問結交之道; :同情,憐憫也;

The disciples of Zixia asked Zizhang about the principles of association.

Zizhang said:What did Zixia say?

They replied:Zixia says associate with those who are worthy associating with.Push away those who are not.

Zizhong said:This is different from what I have learned.Superior man honours the talented and virtuous,and bears with all.He praises the good and pities the incompetents.If I am a person of talents and virtue,whom could I not bear with? If I were a man without talents and virtue,what men will put me away from them? Why should I push anyone away?

19.4子夏:雖小道,必有可觀者焉;致遠恐泥,是以君子不為也.

本章言小道雖有可觀,卻不可作大道用.

子夏:雖然是一種小小的技藝,一定也有可觀的地方.如想據以推求深遠的大作為,便泥滯行不通.所以君子不願學這些呢.

小道:小的技藝; :拘滯不通; :學也;

Zixia said:Even the petty arts have something worthy to look at.But they proved to be quite a hindrance to lofty ideas.For that reason, a superior person would not practice them.

19.5子夏:日知其所亡,月無忘其所能,可謂好学也已矣!

本章言為學日益之道.

子夏:每天獲得我所不知的,每月將已知的再温習着不讓它忘掉,這樣可算得是個好學的人啦.

:同無,謂己所未知者;

Zixia said:A person who can daily search for what he does not know to learn,and revises it monthly of what he has learned to make sure he would not forget it.That may really be called fond of learning

19.6子夏:博學而篤志,切問而近思,仁在其中矣!

本章言學問思辨,即是仁的功夫.

子夏:多多地去學習研究,堅定自己的志向,有疑便切實問個明白,一切事理,要從淺近處去推想.仁道就在裡面了.

篤志:堅守其志; :切實去詳詢; 近思:從淺近處去推想;

Zixia said:A person who is erudite and consistent with his ambition,has a fervent desire to learn and diligent to think,kindness can also be found in this person.

19.7子夏:百工居肆以成其事;君子學以致其道.

本章言人為學,志在求達成正道.

子夏:各種行業工人居住在市廛之中,完成他們各項技藝上的事物.君子去學習,以求達到正道.

:市中陳列器物之所;

Zixia said:Craftsmen of all sorts must stay in their workshops to accomplish their jobs.Superior men study anywhere to achieve their aims for virtue.

19.8子夏:小人之過也必文.

本章言小人有過,必加掩飾.

子夏:小人的過失,一定加以掩飾.

:砌詞掩飾也;

Zixia said:Mean people always gloss their mistakes.

19.9子夏:君子有三變:望之儼然,即之也温,聽其言也厲.

本章形容君子之氣概.

子夏:君子的態度,看上去有三種變化.遠望他很莊重矜持.和他相接卻又很温和可親,聽到他的言論,就感到非常嚴正.

儼然:莊重貌; 即之:與他接觸; :嚴肅正確;

Zixia said:A superior man has three changes of countenance.He looks stern from afar.genial when you are close to him,when he speaks, he is incisive.

19.10子夏:君子信而後勞其民,未信,則以為厲己也;信而後諫,未信,則以為謗己也.

本章言使民,事君,應以誠信.

子夏:在上位者必先有誠信於人,而後才去使民.當人民沒有信賴時,為發動人民做事,人民以為是在上者虐害他們.君知你誠信,而後才可進諫,如果沒得到信任,你去諫諍,就反而以為你是在毀謗於他呢.

:虐害; :言語毁壞

Zixia said:A superior man will not labour his people unless he has earned their trust,if not, people will think that he is oppressing them.He will not remonstrate his prince unless he has gained his trust.otherwise the prince will think that he is slandering him.

19.11 子夏:大德不踰閑,小德出入可也.

本章言大節不可越軌.小節可便宜行事也.

子夏:大節當不可超越範圍;小節則可便宜行事,稍有出入,也還可以呢.

大德:大的禮節; 小德:普通日常的小禮節; 踰閑:超越範圍;

Zixia said:The norm of major etiquettes must not be overstepped even slightly.Adjusting suitably for trifles are probably acceptable.  

19.12子游:子夏之門人小子,當洒掃應對進退則可矣!抑末也!本之則無如之何? …子夏聞之曰:!過矣!君子之道,孰先傳焉?孰後倦焉?譬諸草木,區以別矣.君子之道焉可誣也?有始有卒者其惟聖人乎?

本章記子游子夏教人,未重根本.子夏以為教人,當有定序,不可躐等.

子游:子夏的學生,規定做洒掃庭院,應答賓客,進退儀節,這些倒也可以,可是這些只是末節,根本道理卻沒有,這算什麼呢?…子夏聽到說:!子游的說法錯了,君子教人之道,那些應先傳授?那些該在後面,便懶得傳授呢?譬如種植草木一樣,按着種類分別,君子教人,那能不分深淺枉加施教呢?教學要有始有終的.這只有聖人才能做到吧!

:不合程度枉加施教; :終也;

子游:511-?,子游,國人..武城.特習於禮,尤於文學,列位孔门十哲(子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏).

Ziyou said:The disciples of Zixia are learning to sprinkle,sweep,answer guest as reception and seeing them off.Are these learnings not come last? Basic learnings are omitted,why so?

Zixia heard of it and said:Alas! Yan You(Ziyou)is wrong.The way of a superior man(for teaching),what would he choose to teach first? What would be too tiresome  to teach at last? Take planting for example,are there not different species? The way of a superior man(for teaching), how can it be disorderly? Have a beginning and have a ffinish, that is only a sage can do!

19.13子貢:仕而優則學,學而優則仕.

本章言修己治人,不斷求進.

子貢:做官做到很完美而有餘力,就應該去研究學問.為學有了心得而有餘力,就應該出來做官.

:做事能完美而餘有力;

子貢:端木賜衛國人.(貢本作贛),孔子弟子,孔子31,(孔子十哲之一:子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏).子貢有口才,能料事,善科殖,家累千金.相衛,.嘗說吳出師敵齊以存魯.聘享諸侯.所至之國,其國君無不與之分庭抗禮.卒於.

Zigong said:One who excels in works should devote to study with spare energy.One who excels in studies should devote to work with spare energy as well.

19.14子游:,致乎哀而止;

本章言喪當哀即止.

子游:居喪,達到哀就夠了.

子游:511-?,子游,國人..武城.特習於禮,尤於文學,列位孔门十哲(子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏).

Ziyou said:Mourning should be stopped at grief.

Connotation:excessive grief is debilitating.

19.15子游:吾友,為難能也!然而未仁.

本章子張未入仁域.

子游:我的朋友子張,像他那樣的修持,已很難做到了,然而未入仁的境界.

子游:511-?,子游,國人..武城.特習於禮,尤於文學,列位孔门十哲(子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏).

Ziyou said:My friend Zizhang can achieve things that are difficult to accomplish.But he is not benevolent yet.

19.16曾子:堂堂乎.難與並為仁矣!

本章子張重在外表,未能內俢仁德.

曾子:看起來外表堂堂皇皇的子張! 很難和他同修內在的仁德呢!

堂堂:外表美盛有氣派.曾子在這裡指子張為學只講外表,不重視內心的道德修養,所以下文說難以和他一起達到仁.

曾子:子輿505-436武城,曾點之子.父子皆為孔子弟子.事親至孝.悟聖道一貫之旨.以其學傳子思(孔子孫兒),後世稱為宗聖.作曾子十八篇.孔子孫兒孔伋之師也,子思之儒.孔伋曾子孝道矣.

Zengzi said:How imposing is the manner of Zizang. It is difficult to practice virtue together with him.

19.17曾子:吾聞諸夫子:“人未有自致者也,必也親喪乎!”

本章言人雖未能盡其在己,尚能盡心親喪.

曾子:我聽到老師講過人未有能自盡其心的,假使說是有的話,一定是盡心於親喪了吧!

曾子:子輿505-436武城,曾點之子.父子皆為孔子弟子.事親至孝.悟聖道一貫之旨.以其學傳子思(孔子孫兒),後世稱為宗聖.作曾子十八篇.孔子孫兒孔伋之師也,子思之儒.孔伋曾子孝道矣.

Zengzi said:I once heard our master said ‘even for those who do not like to exude their true feelings,would definitely show genuine grief at their mournings ’

19.18曾子:吾聞諸夫子:“孟莊子之孝也,其他可能也,其不改父之臣與父之政,是難能也.

本章孟莊子之孝行.

曾子:我曾聽老師講過孟莊子的孝行,別的事情,其他人都可做到,只有不更改父親所用的臣子和父親之政令,是別人難做得到的啊!”

孟莊子:仲孫,,國大夫,其父獻子,有賢德.

曾子:子輿505-436武城,曾點之子.父子皆為孔子弟子.事親至孝.悟聖道一貫之旨.以其學傳子思(孔子孫兒),後世稱為宗聖.作曾子十八篇.孔子孫兒孔伋之師也,子思之儒.孔伋曾子孝道矣.

Zengzi said:I heard our master said ‘The acts of filial piety of Meng Zhuangzi, most of them are easy to do .Except for not replacing his father’s ministers and changing the old policy,that would be hard for others to copy him’

19.19孟氏使陽膚為士師,曾子,曾子:上失其道,民散久矣!如得其情,則哀矜而勿喜.

本章曾子陽膚為士,要體恤下情.

孟氏陽膚為獄官,陽膚曾子請教.曾子:在上位的失去正道,民心散離已很久了!(指人民容易犯法);如你在判獄時,獲悉他們犯罪實在情形,就要同情他們,不要以為查出真相自以為喜.

:獄官(柳下惠為士師也); :民心散離; 如得其情:如知道其犯罪實情,當哀憐其無知;

孟氏: 孟敬子:大夫,複姓仲孫,公子慶父之後.慶父共仲,故以為仲氏.亦曰仲孫.慶父,諱弑君之罪,更為孟氏.亦曰孟孫氏.

陽膚:據說是孔子弟子.

曾子:子輿505-436武城,曾點之子.父子皆為孔子弟子.事親至孝.悟聖道一貫之旨.以其學傳子思(孔子孫兒),後世稱為宗聖.{曾子十八篇}.孔子孫兒孔伋之師也,子思之儒.孔伋曾子孝道矣.

The leader of the Meng Clan appointed Yang Fu as chief warden.Yang Fu asked Zengzi for advise.Zengzi said:As rulers have failed their duties, people have gone astray for a long time.When you discovered the truth of any crime, be sad and pity for them instead of feelinghappy and  contentfor yourself.

19.20子貢:之不善,不如是之甚也.是以君子悪居下流,天下之惡皆歸焉.

本章子貢王以誡人勿居下流,人將以眾惡加之.

子貢:商紂的不善,並不像如今所傳的那麼厲害啊! 所以有道君子憎厭處於下等不善的環境裏.往往會將天下的壞事,都會加在君子身上來.

不如是:不像如今所傳的;

:zhou粵讀就,朝末代君主.相傳是暴君.所以眾說[助紂為虐]比喻幫助壞人做壞事;

Zigong said:The wickedness of Emperor Zhou(Shang dynasty)was actually not as wicked as depicted today.Thats why a superior man hates to dwell in a ground where its moral standard is low.All bad reputations would flow in upon him like water.

19.21子貢:君子之過也,如日月之食焉.過也,人皆見之,更也,人皆仰之.

本章言君子有過必改.光明磊落.

子貢:君子的過失,好比天上的日蝕和月蝕一樣,一有過失,人人都會看見.等他改了,人人還是仰望着他.

日月之食:日蝕月蝕; :改過;

子貢:端木賜衛國人.(貢本作贛),孔子弟子,孔子31,(孔子十哲之一:子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏).子貢有口才,能料事,善科殖,家累千金.相衛,.嘗說吳出師敵齊以存魯.聘享諸侯.所至之國,其國君無不與之分庭抗禮.卒於.

Zigong said:The faults of a superior man are like eclipses of the sun and the moon.When he is making a mistake, everyone sees it. When he is correcting it, everyone looks up to admire him.

19.22衛公孫朝問於子貢:仲尼焉學? …子貢:文武之道,未墜於地,在人;賢者識其大者,不賢者識其小者.莫不有文武之道焉.夫子焉不學? 而亦何常師之有?

本章言自古聖賢下學而上達,並無專師.

國大夫公孫朝子貢說道:仲尼的學問,是從何處得來的? …子貢:文王,武王所留傳下來的禮樂典章制度,還沒有全亡失,如今的人,還能知道,賢人能知道那些重大的,不賢的人知道那些細小的,他們都傳着文武之道.我們老師,何嘗不學,那有什麽固定老師呢?

公孫朝:國大夫; 文武之道:周文王,周武王之謨訓功烈; 未墜於地:沒有墜落亡失; 常師:固定的老師;

:周文王.周武王之父.殷紂王時為西伯侯.國於岐山之下.西伯侯積善施仁.政化大行,崇侯虎讒之於紂,被囚羑(yao);其臣散宜生等獻以美女玉帛得釋歸.益行善政.諸侯多歸之.三分天下有其二.武王有天下,追尊為文王.

:周武王,周文王之子,.末期,嗣為西伯.殷紂無道,武王率諸侯策征,殷紂牧野自焚而死.武王乃代有天下.即帝位.國都[今陝西長安](hao讀号).在位十九年崩.謚曰.

子貢: 端木賜衛國人.(貢本作贛),孔子弟子,孔子31,(孔子十哲之一:子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏).子貢有口才,能料事,善科殖,家累千金.相衛,.嘗說吳出師敵齊以存魯.聘享諸侯.所至之國,其國君無不與之分庭抗禮.卒於.

Gongsun Chao of Wei asked Zigong:Who taught Zhongni(Confucius)?

Zigong answered:The Way of King Wen and King Wu of Zhou have not fallen into ruins.They are found within men.Men of virtue and talents memorize its major principles. Others grasp its minor principles.There is not anyone who does not possess some sort of Wen-Wu principle.How would the master not have learned from them? Why would he need a fixed teacher?

19.23叔孫武叔語大夫於朝曰:子貢賢於仲尼; …子服景伯以告子貢.子貢:譬之宮,之牆也及肩,窺見室家之好.夫子之牆數仞,不得其門而入,不見宗廟之美,百官之富.得其門者或寡矣.夫子之云,不亦宜乎!

本章子貢讚美孔子之德.

叔孫武叔在朝廷上向眾大夫說:仲尼還要賢; …子服景伯把這話告訴子貢. 子貢:譬如家屋外面的圍牆,(子貢自稱)的牆,高只到人肩,可從牆外看見家中一切美好的陳設.老師的牆,高達好幾仞,如果不得其門而入,就看不見裏面像宗廟裝飾的輝煌,也見不到文武百官盛多.能夠找到門徑進去的人或者太少了.武叔大夫所說的.不是很合適麽?

叔孫武叔:大夫,叔孫,州仇,諡曰; 子服景伯:大夫,子服,,,諡曰; 宮牆:居家之圍牆; :八尺曰仞; 夫子:這裡指叔孫;

子貢: 端木賜衛國人.(貢本作贛),孔子弟子,孔子31,(孔子十哲之一:子淵,子騫,伯牛,仲弓,子有,子貢,子路,子我,子游,子夏).子貢有口才,能料事,善科殖,家累千金.相衛,.嘗說吳出師敵齊以存魯.聘享諸侯.所至之國,其國君無不與之分庭抗禮.卒於.

Shusun Wushun talking to some senior officers at court,said:Zigong has better talents than Zhongni.

Zifu Jingbo told Zigong about it.Zigong said:Let me compare it as a fence of wall surrounding a house.Ci(Zigong) wall is only shoulder height.People can peep my house clearly and thoroughly over it.The fence wall of the house for my master is several fathoms tall.If one could not find doors to enter such kind of houses, one cannot see the beauty of the ancestral temple,nor the rich varieties of wealthy officers.But I am afraid that those who find the door to enter the house of my master are few.So it is no wonder that he should speak like that for my master.

19.24叔孫武叔仲尼,子貢:無以為也!仲尼不可毁也.他人之賢者,丘陵也.猶可踰也,仲尼,日月也.無得而踰焉.人雖欲自絕,其何傷於日月乎?多見其不知量也!

本章記子貢孔子之德,如浮雲遮月日.不能損其光明也.

叔孫武叔毀謗孔子.子貢:這樣做是沒有用的.仲尼是不能毁謗的.其他人有的才德,如同丘陵一般高.還可超越過去.仲尼同日月的一般高,是無法超越的.一個人即使想棄絕日月的光明,這對日月又有甚麼損害呢??真多麼顯得不知度量自己啊!

無以為也:不可以這樣做啊; :才德也; 自絕: 自絕於日月; :,適也; 不知量:不知量度自己;

Shusun Wushu slandered Zhongni. Zigong said:.Do not do that.Zhongni can not be calumniated. Anyone else talents,are just like molds,all but only surmountable.The talents of Zhongni,are like the sun and the moon.They are unsurmountable.Althoug someone might wish to boycott the sun and the moon.What harm can they do to them? Excessively overrating themselves, Thats all!  

19.25陳子禽子貢:子為恭也,仲尼豈賢於子乎? …子貢:君子一言以為知, 一言以為不知.言不可慎也.夫子之不可及也.猶天之不可階而升也.夫子之得邦家者,所謂立之斯立,道之斯行,綏之斯來,動之斯和,其生也榮,其死也哀.如之何其可及也?

本章記子貢贊美孔子才德之偉大,非人之所可及.

陳子禽子貢:你是對老師(孔子)特別謙讓罷了,仲尼難道會賢過於你麽? …子貢:君子聽人一句話,就看出他是智. 一句話,就看出他是不智.人說話不可不慎重啊!老師道德之高是人都不可及的,好像天樣,不可用階梯登上去的啊!老師如得到掌理國的國政,如古人所說立之以禮,則民無不立了.導之以禮,則民無不聽從.安樂其民,則遠方之人,皆聞風而來了.適時發動人民服役,人民皆和穆相從了.生前受到人人尊敬的光榮,死後受人人懷念的哀思.這樣,別人怎能趕得上呢?”

為恭:恭敬謙遜於師也; :階梯也; 立之斯立:立之以禮,則民無不立; 道之斯行:導之以禮,則民莫不從; 綏之斯來:安樂其民,則遠人聞風而來歸; 動之斯和:發動民役,則民皆和穆相從;

陳子禽:511-430子元,一字子禽,又名原亢,小孔子40.(安徽蒙城縣).大夫陳子車之弟.孔子弟子,77位弟子中名列第68.曾做過單父(山東縣南).陳亢為宰時,施德政於民,頗受後人好評.其兄死(大夫),反對家人殉葬.

Zigong said: For one word a superior man is set as wise,and for one word he is deemed to be unwise. So we should be careful indeed about what word we say. No one can equal the master, like heaven cannot be climbed up to by a ladder. Had the master ever been able to put propriety in to the control of a state or of royal family, it would be like what he had proclaimed, in his words . Raise them with propriety and they will stand up like so; lead them the righteous way and they will walk like so; pacify them and the afar will arrive; labour them at appropriate times and they are harmonious.His life has been glorified by all; his death has been bitterly lamented by all. As such,how can the master be ever equaled?
