道德經章78-81中英淺譯

 

78水德章第七十八 The Great Virtue of Water

天下莫柔弱於水;Nothing in the world is sorter and weaker than water;而攻強者莫之能勝。But, for attacking the hard and strong, there is nothing like it!以其無以易之。For nothing can take its place.弱之勝強,柔之勝剛,That the weak overcomes the strong, and the soft overcomes the hard,天下莫不知,莫能行。This is something known by allbut practised by none.是以聖人云:Therefore, the Sage says「受國之垢,是謂社稷主。To receive the dirt of a country is to be the lord of its soil-shrines.受國不祥,是為天下王。」To bear the calamities of a country is to be the prince of the world.正言若反。Indeed, Truth sounds like its opposite

天下莫柔弱于水,而攻堅強者莫之能勝,以其無以易之。弱之勝強,柔之勝剛,天下莫不知,莫能行。是以聖人雲:"受國之垢,是謂社稷主;受國不祥,是為天下王。"正言若反。

[譯文]

遍天下再沒有什麽東西比水更柔弱了,而攻堅克强却沒有什麽東西可以勝過水。弱勝過强,柔勝過剛,遍天下沒有人不知道,但是沒有人能實行。所以有道的聖人這樣說:承擔全國的屈辱,才能成爲國家的君主,承擔全國的禍灾,才能成爲天下的君王。正面的話好像在反說一樣。

 

79左契章第七十九 Unforgettable

和大怨When a great wound is healed,必有狳怨。There will still remain a scar.安可以為善?Can this be a desirable state of affairs?是以聖人執左契,Therefore, the Sage, holding the left-hand tally, Performs his part of the covenant,而不責於人。But lays no claims upon others.有德司契,The virtuous attends to his duties無德司徹。The virtueless knows only to levy duties upon the people.天道無親,The Way of Heaven has no private affections常與善人。But always accords with the good.

{原文}

和大怨,必有餘怨;報怨以德,安可以為善?是以聖人執左契,而不責于人。有德司契,無德司徹。天道無親,常與善人。

[譯文]

和解深重的怨恨,必然還會殘留下殘餘的怨恨;用德來報答怨恨,這怎麽可以算是妥善的辦法呢?因此,有道的聖人保存借據的存根,但幷不以此强迫別人償還債務。有之人就像持有借據的聖人那樣寬容,沒有的人就像掌管稅收的人那樣苛刻刁詐。自然規律對任何人都沒有偏愛,永遠幫助有德的善人。

 

80小國章第八十Simple is Graceful, Ignorance is Blissful.

小國寡民!Ah,for a small country with a small population!使有什伯之器而不用。Though there are highly efficient mechanical contrivances,the people have no use for them.使民重死而不遠Let them mind death and refrain from migrating to distant places.雖有舟輿,Although there are boats and carriages,無所乘之。Yet no one rides them.雖有甲兵,weapons and armour there may still be,無所陳之。but there are no occasions for using or displaying them.使人復結繩而用之。Let the people revert to communication by knotting cords.甘其食。See to it that they are contented with their food,美其服。pleased with their clothing,安其居。satisfied with their houses,樂其俗。and inured to their simple ways of living.鄰國相望,Though there may be another country in the neighbourhood so close that they are within sight of each other雞犬之聲相聞,and the crowing of cocks and barking of dogs in one place can be heard in the other民至老死不相往來。yet there is no traffic between them, and throughout their lives the two peoples have notning to do with each other

小國寡民。使有什伯之器而不用;使民重死而不遠徙;雖有舟輿,無所乘之;雖有甲兵,無所陳之。使人複結繩而用之。至治之極。甘美食,美其服,安其居,樂其俗,鄰國相望,鷄犬之聲相聞,民至老死不相往來。

[譯文]

使國家變小,使人民稀少。即使有各種各樣的器具,却幷不使用;使人民重視死亡,而不向遠方遷徙;雖然有船隻車輛,却不必每次坐它;雖然有武器裝備,却沒有地方去布陣打仗;使人民再回復到遠古結繩記事的自然狀態之中。國家治理得好極了,使人民吃得香甜,穿得漂亮、住得安適,過得快樂。國與國之間互相望得見,鶏犬的叫聲都可以聽得見,但人民從生到死,也不互相往來。

 

 

81不積章第八十一Praise the Hidden virtue Achiever

信言不美,Sincere words are not sweet,美言不信。Sweet words are not sincere.善者不辨,Good men are not argumentative,辯者不善。The argumentative are not good.知者不博,The wise are not erudite博者不知。The erudite are not wise 聖人不積。The Sage does not take to hoarding.既以為人,The more he lives for others,己愈有。the fuller is his life.既以與人,己愈多。The more he gives, the more he abounds.天之道,The Way of Heaven利而不害。is to benefit, not to harm.聖人之道,為而不爭。The Way of the Sage is to do his duty, not to strive with anyone.

{原文}

信言不美,美言不信。善者不辯,辯者不善。知者不博,博者不知。聖人不積,既以為人己愈有,既以與人己愈多。天之道,利而不害。聖人之道,為而不爭。

[譯文]

真實可信的話不漂亮,漂亮的話不真實。善良的人不巧說,巧說的人不善良。真正有知識的人不賣弄,賣弄自己懂得多的人不是真有知識。聖人是不存占有之心的,而是盡力照顧別人,他自己也更爲充足;他盡力給予別人,自己反而更豐富。自然的規律是讓萬事萬物都得到好處,而不傷害它們。聖人的行爲準則是,做什麽事都不跟別人爭奪。
