Cheryl's birthday: Introduction to Logic

A brilliant quiz for parents to introduce children age 8+ to Logic.

 

Find out Cheryl's birthday

Cheryl asked Albert and Bernard to guess her birthday. After listing out a series of days viz May 151619 Jun 1718 Jul 1416Aug 141517; as clues for Albert and Bernard Cheryl revealed the month to Albert and the day to Bernard separately.

The game is for us to find out Cheryl's birthday after hearing 3 short comments from Albert and Bernard as follow:

 

Albert: I couldn't guess the birthday I don't think Bernard could either.

Bernard: Hearing Albert said that I know the birthday now.

Albert: Now hearing Bernard said that I also know the birthday.

What is Cheryl's birthday?

Answer

Jul 16.

After matching up in pairs for the 10 numbers of the days we recognized the singularity of 19 and 18 for their efficacy to identify the months of May and Jun respectively.

(logic 1cognition of singularity)

 

Hearing how confident Albert was saying that Bernard won't be able to tellindicating Albert knew the day revealed to Bernard by Cherul was definitely neither 19 nor 18 hence proved the month Albert got from Cheryl before hand was neither May nor Jun.

(logic 2 inductive reasoning)

 

Bernard, having heard Albert's assertion, was sure to pick the correct month after eliminating May and Jun. And quickly announced he found Cheryl's birthday with the day number he already knew before hand. (logic 3 simple elimination)

 

Now, as Albert. also declared knowing Cheryl's birthday after hearing Bernard's claim, proved that the month Cheryl revealed to Albert was Jul because Jul consisted only a minimum of 2 days in it 14,16. That was the reason why Albert quickly knew it must be 16 as 14 also appeared in Aug which meant the date Cheryl told Bernard before hand was doubtlessly 16 otherwise Bernard won't be able to pin down the month.
